Nevada State Certificate of High School Equivalency (HSE)

Welcome High School Equivalency (HSE) tester to the Vegas PBS Global Online Advanced Learning (GOAL) Computer Lab. We are excited you have chosen us as your testing facility to earn your Nevada State Certificate of High School Equivalency. Please take a moment to review the following requirements to ensure you have a successful HSE testing experience.

How do I get started?

All HSE testers are required to register in person at the Adult Education Office at 2701 E. St. Louis, Door A. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Due to the high volume of students registering, it is highly recommended that you arrive at least two hours before closing time. No appointments are necessary and applicants are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Once you sign in and register, you will have an opportunity to schedule the official HSE pretest. After the pretest, a counselor will review your scores with you to determine if you may need more preparation or you are ready to take the official HSE test.

How do I schedule a testing appointment?

When you are ready, you may sign up with an Adult Education counselor for the HSE test. The HSE test may be taken on a computer or with pencil/paper. You must present a valid state or government-issued photo ID or valid driver license when registering for the HSE test. A payment of $65 is due at the time of scheduling an exam. You will be given a choice of available test dates.

What options are available for scheduling an HSE test?

The HSE test consists of five assessment areas: Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. If you have chosen to take your test on the computer, you may take the subtests in whatever order you wish. The GOAL computer center has four start times (8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., or 2:30 p.m.) Monday – Friday in which to schedule a subtest. Full-day testing is available upon request. Be sure to arrive at the test center at least 15 minutes prior to testing.

Where do I go to take my HSE test on the computer?

The Vegas PBS GOAL Computer Lab is located at 3050 E Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89121. Once you check-in at the front desk, you will be directed to the computer lab on the second floor. Please turn off all cell phones and any personal media devices prior to entering the computer lab.

What may I bring to the computer lab?

You will need to bring the following items with you on the HSE test day:

  • A valid state or government-issued photo ID or valid driver license

  • Layered clothing that will allow you to adapt to a range of room temperatures

  • A copy of your appointment/application confirmation page

If you have a health-related condition that requires you to bring beverages, snacks or additional equipment into the testing room, you must request the accommodation in advance with ETS Disability Services. Otherwise, all items must remain in a locker.

What can I expect on the day of my HSE test?

When you arrive at the computer lab, you must present a valid state or government-issued photo ID or valid driver license at the check-in desk. You will then be assigned a locker to secure all personal items. The only items allowed at your computer station are the official pen, scratch paper and calculator provided by the testing proctor. Once all personal items are secured, the testing proctor will direct you to an assigned computer station. Testers will complete a Certification Statement as well as sign a Rules of Conduct form. The testing proctor will then enter the appropriate assessment password for you to start the subtest.

What if I need assistance during my HSE test?

The testing proctor will be in the computer lab the entire time. If you need assistance during the test or additional scratch paper, raise your hand to signal a proctor to come to your computer station. The proctor may not answer questions about the assessment or use of the calculator. Designated breaks are built into the subtests. A lounge is available for those testing the full day who would like to enjoy a lunch break.

How do I view my HSE test scores?

Upon completion of the test, your scores are available through your HiSET account created at registration with the Adult Education counselor. To access the account go to, click on the For Test Takers tab; and sign into My HiSET Account. If you forgot your username or password, prompts are available to email you the correct information. Please note, the scores for multiple choice tests should display immediately, while the score for the writing exam may be available in 6-10 business days.

How do I know if I passed the HSE test?

Your score report indicates whether or not you passed. To earn a Nevada State Certificate of High School Equivalency, you must meet 3 requirements:

  • Scored at least 8 out of 20 on each subtest

  • Scored at least 2 out of 6 on the essay

  • Achieved an overall score of at least 45 out of 100 when all subtest are added together

Once all five subtests are successfully completed, you will receive your Nevada State Certificate of High School Equivalency and transcript. Additional HSE transcripts may be purchased for $15 at or 855.313.5799. If you did not successfully pass the HSE requirements, you may contact the Adult Education office at 702.799.8650 to schedule a re-take for a subtest. Please note that you have two free re-takes for each subtest.

What is a college and career readiness score?

If you score at least 15 out of 20 on any of the subtests, that indicates college and career readiness. Your college and career readiness score means that you scored at the 75th percentile of graduating high school students and indicates that you should be able to enter non-developmental course work in college.
