Take a Hike! To Liberty Lake

Long before backpackers carved out the Ruby Crest National Scenic Trail, Basque sheepherders ran their flocks over the Ruby Mountains in northeastern Nevada. This majestic range, known as the “Swiss Alps of Nevada,” provides the backdrop for Connor Fields’ trip to Elko in this episode of “Outdoor Nevada.”

The area around the Ruby Mountains is rich with history, unique recreation opportunities, and hordes of Mormon Crickets — if you find yourself there in late May-early June.

Six years after the Lamoille Canyon fire, and three years after massive flooding, Lamoille Canyon has been healing, an echo of the similar situation in Southern Nevada’s Spring Mountains, which were featured in the first episode. So, it’s more important than ever that visitors tread lightly.

LIBERTY LAKE TRAIL

Getting There: From Elko, take Lamoille Highway (Nevada Highway 227) southeast for 12 miles. A quarter mile before the town of Lamoille, turn right onto Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway (Forest Road 660). From here, continue another 12 miles alongside Lamoille Creek and into the mouth of Lamoille Canyon. Before reaching the parking lot at the end of the road, hikers will be greeted with views of numerous peaks that encapsulate the area’s beauty, each of which offers an exciting off-trail adventure for the experienced hiker.

Distance: The out-and-back Liberty Lake Trail is about 8 miles with 1,800 feet of elevation gain. The trail begins on the southeast side of the parking lot and leads hikers past three alpine lakes tucked into Lamoille Canyon. After the climb up Liberty Pass, you’re rewarded with views of Liberty Lake, Liberty Peak, and Lake Peak.

Equipment Needed: The Liberty Lake Trail is best hiked in summer and fall, and does not require a permit. Trekking poles, clothing to protect against the harsh alpine sun, and a water filtration system are recommended.

Pro Tip: Those interested in fishing should add a Tenkara rod to any Ruby Mountains day-hiking kit, along with a handful of flies from Elko Fly Shop.
