Outdoor Nevada In Real Life Sunset and Twilight Kayak Tour

For the second event of the new Outdoor Nevada In Real Life event series, Vegas PBS went on a kayak tour down the Colorado River on a sunset and twilight paddle.

River Dogz, our tour operator, picked up 35 participants at the Vegas PBS station on a very windy Saturday. Once we arrived at Willow Beach, our guides provided us with a safety and how-to lesson for beginners. Though some of us were seasoned kayakers, this group trip was inclusive of all levels. We paddled up the river to Evolution Beach, where we had dinner around the campfire and enjoyed s’mores afterwards.

“We had a great time getting outdoors, kayaking on the Colorado, and supporting PBS at the same time.”

Throughout the Outdoor Nevada IRL adventure, we received educational components on the various animals and plants in Southern Nevada, both native and invasive to our region. We also learned about the history of the Hoover Dam and the related surveying of the area. We even paddled by the remnants of an old river gauge system.

Despite the high wind, we were “blessed by the spirit of Mr. Rogers,” and the winds were always at our back. This allowed the trip to be exhilarating but not strenuous. When we paddled back to Willow Beach, it was nearly dark and we could see the moon rise above the ridges in front of us. This provided a sublime feeling of peace and quiet as we headed home.
