Vegas PBS is the recipient of a $7,500 grant from the NV Energy Foundation, to help support the station’s Ready To Learn initiative. The grant funds will be used to directly support Vegas PBS’ Ready To Learn Family & Community Learning workshops, which provide STEAM instruction to young children ages 3-8 and their families. Independent research on Family & Community Learning found 97% of parents felt more confident helping their children learn science after participating.
Vegas PBS will apply grant funds toward staff time, the purchase of supplies and materials needed to implement the workshops and take-home books and print materials to support ongoing family engagement. As the station continues to navigate the new social dynamics put in place due to COVID-19, face-to-face workshops may not be feasible throughout 2021. Vegas PBS will continue its commitment to learning by mailing all the necessary supplies and materials directly to families, to support a virtual workshop implementation.
Vegas PBS’ Ready To Learn has served Southern Nevada families for over 20 years, using the power of award-winning PBS KIDS media to help thousands of young children, primarily in high-need communities, learn the basic school readiness skills they need to succeed.
In FY 2020, Vegas PBS’ Ready to Learn reached over 146,000 children, parents and caregivers, holding over 900 educational workshops and events. Ready To Learn grants funded over 75,000 books to families to grow their at-home libraries. To learn more about Ready To Learn, visit vegaspbs.org/rtl.
