WHAT: Vegas PBS, DM AHEC, and several universities, colleges and other stakeholders are collaborating to present CampMED, a three-day, two-night medical-related camp designed to build a pipeline of future medical professionals in Nevada. For the third year, students entering their freshman year of high school will have the opportunity to explore their interests in the basic sciences and integrated health care and be exposed to career opportunities in those fields. The program provides an intensive immersion experience for those students who have declared the medical field as their long-term career choice.
CampMED simulates a physician residency experience. Students will spend three days and two nights at the UNLV campus to earn their Beginning Doctor (B.D.) certification. Medical professionals will volunteer their time to mentor campers, teaching them how a physician talks with a patient, how to study the clues to a patient’s illness, and how to solve a health care problem by using critical thinking skills in addition to laboratory techniques.
During camp, students will have the primary goal of diagnosing a fictitious patient and will present their findings on the final day. The in-residency camp requires students to use their evenings for group activities and study sessions. Library research is required for campers to prepare their diagnosis and “patient” report at the end of camp.
WHEN: July 19–21, 2018
WHERE: University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89154
WHY: CampMED provides hands-on experiences in biomedical science workshops involving research and clinical problem-solving. The camp is a way to introduce Nevada youth to the fields of clinical medicine and medical self-efficacy and create a future pipeline of health care professionals in Nevada.
