Music Discovery for August in Southern Nevada

Maybe the first music that felt like your own was a mixtape you recorded right off the radio. Or an mp3 you downloaded and loaded onto an iPod. Whatever it was, finding and listening to new music is an exhilarating experience. If you feel like your playlist is getting a bit stale, here are a few ways to discover your next favorite jam. 

For over 50 years, historic concerts and performances have been preserved and celebrated on public broadcasting. Just look at Austin City Limits, which you can binge with our Passport member benefit.

You can find music programs year round on Vegas PBS, but this August features exquisite selections.

From Skye Canyon to Cadence, there are many great venues to enjoy live music in the Las Vegas Valley. There are, of course, the stadiums and arenas of the Strip, but high ticket prices and exorbitant fees have made some folks decide to take their listening ears elsewhere.

Most indie music venues are centered in Downtown Las Vegas' East Fremont neighborhood and Arts District; places like The Dustland Bar, The Usual Place, and Bizarre Bar. But Henderson has its own DIY spots like Eagle Aerie Hall and Grey Witch. If you live near a Station casino, chances are there’s a lounge or showroom offering live music on a regular basis.

Streaming is definitely convenient, but has its drawbacks like anything else. (Sketchy internet service perhaps being the least among them.) Maybe that’s why some people have decided to return to physical media like CDs, cassettes, and even vinyl.

Retailers like 11th Street Records, Zia Records, Record City, and Moondog Records offer huge selections of new and pre-owned media. While new pressings are often pricier, old vinyl and tapes are often more affordable and provide hidden or forgotten gems.

Power KCEP-FM 88.1 regularly features local artists and musicians on its talk shows and playlists. Nevada Public Radio (KNPR 88.9) has the music retrospective series “Sound Opinions” on Sundays at 6 p.m. and live music series “World Cafe” every day at 7 p.m.
