180 Days: A Year Inside an American High School

“180 Days” tells an intimate story of Washington Metropolitan High School (DC Met) and its first graduating class. There are many ways to connect with the 180 Days project; share the videos, say something to the community, or watch and vote in the student film festival. When it comes to education reform, we all have a story to tell.

Jobs for Americas GraduatesJAG is short for Jobs for America’s Graduates, and it is a national program that has existed for over 30 years in over 30 states. Governor Sandoval implemented JAG into 4 Southern and 4 Northern Nevada schools this year. JAG helps students graduate, and then aids them in securing employment or pursuing higher education after they graduate.

On Wednesday, May 15th at 5:30, there will be a celebration for our JAG students at Bonanza High School, This celebration of the students’ hard work is called the Initiation and Invocation Ceremony. Please come and help us honor our students. For information call (702) 799-4000.

Vegas PBS is a Public Media Community Hub to collect and disseminate important information about the dropout crisis in Nevada. We are leveraging our communications technology expertise and existing partnerships to disseminate the information. The purpose of the initiative is to help teachers and parents that work with students in danger of dropping out. Vegas PBS has engaged with the following public broadcasters as partners to broaden the impact of this initiative: KCEP - Power 88; Nevada Public Radio - KNPR  and KCNV.

Vegas PBS is working with national experts, state leaders, Clark County School District (CCSD) Divisions, students, parents and teachers of target schools to develop meaningful messaging, educational resources, and professional development resources. A three-pronged approach has been developed to reach all levels of the community: Outreach in the Community, Production on-air and Online Resources.

The staggering rate of dropouts in America poses a serious threat to our national welfare -- and to the lives of young people at risk. More than 25% of the current ninth graders will not graduate from high school. It is a problem that must be solved. Public media is joining the fight -- with a bold new initiative, American Graduate.
