How to Build an Astronaut

How to Build an Astronaut

From 2001: A Space Odyssey to the more recent blockbuster film Gravity, life in space has held a long fascination for us. Today, the human race stands on the brink of a new era. Commercial companies are offering tourists a journey into space. Astronauts are sharing their images and tweeting live as they pass over the Earth. And space exploration is about to take a whole new leap forward.

But getting into and living in Space is still on the very limits of human technology and exploration. So how do you get into orbit? And once there, how do you cope with the physical and mental demands of life in an alien world?

Follow Major Tim Peake’s gruelling training to become Britain’s first astronaut on the International Space Station. It meets the engineers, physicists, and mechanics who design and build the technology that will take Tim to the ISS and the medics and psychologists who will monitor his well-being once he’s there.

Featuring Tim’s own video diary, the programme offers a unique picture of an astronaut’s life, from what it takes to become physically and mentally prepared for the journey, through to Tim’s life and work once he is on board the International Space Station.
