Vegas PBS Family Literacy Kits
Vegas PBS Ready To Learn is a participant in the Reading Rainbow Literacy Kit project, an initiative
intended to "bridge" the literacy gap from school to home. Two Clark County schools initially participated in the project,
but due to the success of the program, Vegas PBS has provided literacy kits to each elementary school in the Clark County School District (CCSD), bringing the total number of literacy kits in circulation throughout CCSD to
over 2,000! Schools are encouraged to use the kits and materials the best way they see fit for their students and families, extending literacy beyond the classroom
Each literacy kit contains a VHS and/or DVD episode of Reading Rainbow and its corresponding book, as well a hands-on activity and a "Read, View, Do"
resource guide. This guide provides ideas and discussion questions for each step of the "Read, View, Do" learning triangle. All print materials are included in English and in Spanish.
As a component of the "Open Doors" Community Collaboration Grant recently awarded to Vegas PBS and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, young people's librarians will be implementing their use in local libraries. The kits will also be available for checkout to the general public. This project is just one component of Vegas PBS Ready To Learn's commitment to family literacy. |
