Community Engagement Group
The Vegas PBS Community Engagement Group is made up of philanthropic and civic-minded members who donate $500 annually to support public television programs and Vegas PBS outreach services that affect families, children and other vulnerable members of our Southern Nevada community. Members’ donations also provide them with the opportunity to attend and volunteer at events and workshops within our Educational Media Services and Workforce Training & Economic Development Departments. These opportunities include, but are not limited to:
PBS KIDS Writing Contest Judging: Vegas PBS hosts a yearly writing competition for Southern Nevada students in grades K-5. Grade levels are judged using a rubric based on originality, creative expression, storytelling technique, illustrations, and overall impression. Community Engagement Group members work in teams to judge grade levels at Vegas PBS.
Las Vegas Science and Technology Festival: Community Engagement Group members assist with a “Vegas PBS Mobile Lab” at the Festival by helping to demonstrate Vegas PBS’ educational PBS KIDS mobile apps for families and providing interested families with free redemption codes to extend the learning at home.
Math/Measurement Family Engagement Workshops: Community Engagement Group members assist Vegas PBS Ready To Learn staff with family engagement workshops for preschool students and their families. During the workshop, Vegas PBS utilizes PBS KIDS resources and hands-on activities to teach families simple ways to expose their children to math and measurement concepts at home. Assistance is needed to help families with the hands-on activity and to bring a measurement-themed story to life through role-play.
SBA Awards Luncheon: This event is hosted in partnership with the Nevada District office of the US Small Business Administration to recognize Small Business Owners for their contributions to the state of Nevada’s economy. Community Engagement Group members assist with making the event a success by compiling the sponsor bags stuffing prior to the event or the day of the event, assisting with the registration and sign-in of the winners and guests or greeting and assisting in table logistics.
HiSet Graduation at UNLV: This event is hosted to recognize the accomplishments of people who have successfully completed their High School Equivalency (formally known as GED) Test and have obtained their High School Completion Certificate. Community Engagement Group members assist with making the event a success by assisting Vegas PBS with distributing literature and congratulatory “bags” to the graduates as they exist.
Veterans Job Fairs: These events are hosted for Veterans and their spouses. Veteran-friendly employers with available job openings do on-site interviews and talk to job-seekers about available opportunities at their organization. Community Engagement Group members would assist with making the events a success by providing candidates with information on the workforce training programs, sign-in of the job seekers and employers, or set-up and tear-down of the event.
Book Labeling: Community Engagement Group members help inventory and label grant-funded books for distribution to at-risk families throughout the upcoming year.
Compile Nutrition Workshop Kits: Community Engagement Group members compile envelopes filled with nutrition activities and grant-funded resources for use in Ready To Learn family engagement workshops.
International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day: This event is hosted to educate the public on suicide. Community Engagement Group members would assist with making the events a success by compiling bags of information to be distributed at the event, assisting with the day’s registration sign-in, or assisting with meeting set-up the day of the event.
Compile Reading for Smiles Dental Workshop Kits: Community Engagement Group members compile bags filled with grant-funded dental resources, including a toothbrush, dental flossers and a book, for use in Ready To Learn family engagement workshops.
