Vegas PBS’ ‘artScene’ Premieres October 30, 2013
(Las Vegas) – Vegas PBS’ Emmy Award-winning series artScene is back with its second season, premiering at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30 with another 13-week run. artScene will offer a mix of local art stories as well as national pieces, with the first episode highlighting Las Vegas photographer Daniel Mollohan. Bringing an artist’s eye to documentary photography, his list of projects include Matt O’Brien’s landmark book “Beneath the Neon” about the homeless population living in the tunnels beneath Las Vegas.
Once again helmed by executive producer Matt Christensen, artScene will continue to shine a much-needed light on the artists who call Las Vegas home, including Former Las Vegas showgirl Lou Anne Chessik who has teamed up with area high schools to host an annual art contest that celebrates the iconic importance of the Las Vegas showgirl; budding film and television actor Sean Kyle and how his battle with a rare cancer has shaped his career; Former Las Vegas Philharmonic conductor Harold Weller and former Clark County School District principal Art Ochoa and their first ever summer camp of the Foundation to Assist Young Musicians “Violins for Kids” program; Bonham’s Motorcycle Auction featuring history’s rarest and most iconic bikes on the block; and many more.
“PBS provides more arts and performance programming than any other network,” said Vegas PBS General Manager Tom Axtell. “artScene represents our local commitment to illuminate the artists and arts organizations that provide local access to live and collectable art in Southern Nevada. We believe this specific local focus will grow the audience for live performances in Las Vegas and stimulate interest in music, dance and theater among our community members, and our video exchange program with other stations will allow some of our stories to reach national audiences.”
artScene is made possible by the Major Market Group Arts Initiative, a 28-station collaborative started this year. This collaboration allows large market PBS stations to share arts features with one another. The effort involves stations that will launch or expand local arts coverage to compliment the 500 hours of arts programming offered by PBS each year.
The Major Market Group Arts Initiative will involve stories covering myriad aspects of the performing and visual arts and feature interviews with diverse artists, writers, composers and performers. The features will also be geographically diverse and artistically broad, allowing local arts and culture institutions and local funders to present Las Vegas stories to a national audience.
