Vegas PBS and CPB Expand Content and Resources to Support Local Veterans
(Las Vegas, May 13, 2014) – Vegas PBS and CPB today announced the launch of a new veterans’ initiative that features compelling stories of recent veteran experiences and local community engagement efforts to increase dialogue and solutions as our nation’s veterans transition to civilian life. The initiative includes a community engagement campaign funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) called Veterans Coming Home, and national, multi-platform content on Vegas PBS under the banner of Stories of Service.
Vegas PBS is one of 13 high-need communities to be awarded a CPB station grant to work with community-based partners, inspire greater dialogue around issues and solutions, and facilitate veterans’ transition to civilian life. Vegas PBS will offer veterans a Profiles Pathway™ Assessment, which measures aptitude, attitude, behavior, skills, education and preferences, and provides occupational feedback on the jobs and careers most aligned to the veteran. The program provides assistance in writing a resume in civilian terms and seeking additional education or certification to qualify for those jobs identified through the assessment. Vegas PBS will also offer educational training scholarships through its Global Online Advanced Learning (GOAL) initiative.
Vegas PBS’ Stories of Service programming kicks off with the May 13 premiere of Coming Back with Wes Moore, funded by CPB. Spurred by the suicide of his friend and fellow officer, executive producer and host Wes Moore sets out to analyze the obstacles many face when adjusting to life after war. The series explores why some service members easily return to society while others struggle.
Vegas PBS recently held a free screening of Coming Back with Wes Moore, along with a panel discussion with several local veterans, in which they discussed issues they’ve faced during reintegration. The event raised awareness for the issues facing veterans in our community – PTSD, job placement, reintegration into family and civilian life, suicide prevention – and addressed the resources available during their transition home.

This film re-creates the landscape of D-Day, a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since: 3,000 planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind German lines, and 7,000 ships delivered around 20,000 military vehicles and 130,000 soldiers onto the beaches. Once on the shore, the troops had to negotiate two million mines buried in the sand and hundreds of miles of barbed wire, while dodging the shells and bullets fired by 40,000 German defenders.
