Desert Meadows Area Health Education Center Collaborates with Nevada Colleges to Introduce the First CAMPMED Program

50 High School Students to Attend Three-Day Medical Camp July 21-23

WHO:  Desert Meadows Area Health Education Center, a service of Vegas PBS, and several partners, including: WGU Nevada, College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College, Roseman University of Health Sciences, Touro University Nevada, UNLV, and UNR.

WHAT:  Desert Meadows AHEC and several universities and colleges in southern and northern Nevada are collaborating to present CAMPMED, a three-day intensive immersion experience held for the first time in Nevada. The medical-related camp is designed to stimulate participating students’ interest in the basic sciences and integrated healthcare and to expose them to career opportunities in those fields. The 50 students who will attend are all entering 9th grade in the fall and have declared medical opportunities as their long-term career choice.

Campers will spend three days and two nights at the UNLV campus. Experiences will include learning how a physician talks with a patient, how to study the clues to a patient’s illness, and how to solve a case by using critical thinking skills in addition to laboratory techniques. CAMPMED is an in-residency camp. Evenings are used for group activities and study sessions. Library research is required for campers to prepare their diagnosis and “patient” report at the culmination of camp.

WHEN:  July 21 - 23, 2016

WHERE:  University of Nevada, Las Vegas: 4505 S. Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89154

WHY:  The program provides “hands-on” experiences in biomedical science workshops involving research and clinical problem-solving. It is a way to introduce Nevada youths to the fields of clinical medicine and medical self-efficacy.
